Sabine Parish honors fallen officers during National Police Week 2026

As communities across the nation observe National Police Week 2026, the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office is honoring the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

National Police Week is being observed from Sunday, May 10 through Saturday, May 16, with Peace Officers Memorial Day recognized on Friday, May 15.

The annual observance was established in 1962 after President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and designated the week in which it falls as National Police Week.

The recognition was created through a joint resolution of Congress to honor officers who lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting others.

Sheriff Aaron Mitchell said five law enforcement officers from Sabine Parish have died in the line of duty over the past 60 years.

Those officers include Louisiana State Trooper Clarence Miller Jr., Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Detective Jimmy Kinney, Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Leone, Many Police Officer Waymon Ferguson, and Zwolle Police Officer Howard Evans Jr.

According to the sheriff’s office, each of their names is permanently engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., where thousands of fallen officers from across the country are honored.

National officials recently announced that the names of 363 officers killed in the line of duty during the past year were added to the memorial wall. The year before, 345 names were added.

One of the most recognized events of National Police Week, the annual Candlelight Vigil, is scheduled to take place Wednesday night, May 13, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The vigil serves as a tribute to fallen officers and a time of remembrance for surviving family members, friends, and fellow law enforcement personnel.

Sheriff Mitchell encouraged residents to remember and honor the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers who dedicated their lives to protecting their communities.

Traveling exhibit featuring 1766 spanish shipwreck arrives in Sabine Parish

Residents in Sabine Parish now have the opportunity to explore a unique piece of Louisiana maritime history through a traveling museum exhibit featuring artifacts and information from the Spanish shipwreck El Nuevo Constante.

The exhibit, on loan from Baton Rouge, highlights the story of the El Nuevo Constante, an 18th-century Spanish merchant ship that sank off the Louisiana coast in 1766 after encountering severe storms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Local organizers are encouraging residents and visitors to stop by the museum to experience the display and learn more about one of Louisiana’s most significant underwater archaeological discoveries.

The El Nuevo Constante was rediscovered in 1979 near Cameron Parish after a shrimper accidentally snagged artifacts from the wreck site in his nets. Archaeologists later recovered thousands of historical items from the ship, including gold and silver ingots, copper cargo, ceramics, cannons, leather goods, and ship components.

Historians say the vessel had departed from Veracruz, Mexico, carrying cargo bound for Havana before being caught in what was believed to be a hurricane near the Louisiana coastline. The crew intentionally grounded the ship after it began taking on water, and all passengers and crew reportedly survived the wreck.

The traveling exhibit includes authentic and replica artifacts designed to give visitors insight into colonial trade, maritime life, and archaeological recovery efforts connected to the shipwreck.

Officials say the exhibit provides a rare educational opportunity for residents of Sabine Parish to experience Louisiana history firsthand without traveling outside the region.

Community leaders are encouraging families, students, and history enthusiasts to visit the museum while the exhibit remains on display.

Sabine Parish deputies seize suspected methamphetamine during traffic stop, two arrested

The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of two individuals following a traffic stop that led to the seizure of a significant quantity of suspected narcotics early Thursday morning.

According to Sheriff Aaron Mitchell, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Thursday, May 7, 2026, after a vehicle was observed committing a traffic violation on LA Highway 120 at Highway 175 in Belmont.

During the stop, further investigation by the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Tactical Narcotics Team led to the discovery of approximately one-half pound of suspected methamphetamine, along with suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

Authorities identified the driver as Deborah Martinez Sepulvado, 44, of Zwolle. Sepulvado was booked into the Sabine Parish Women’s Jail on the following charges:

Possession with Intent to Distribute Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substance

(Methamphetamine)

Operating a Motor Vehicle While License Suspended

Driving on Roadway Laned for Traffic

Jennifer Ryanne Loe, 42, of Many, was also arrested and booked into the Sabine Parish Women’s Jail on charges including:

Principal to Possession with Intent to Distribute Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substance

(Methamphetamine)

Possession of Marijuana

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Officials stated that no bond had been set at the time of the announcement.

Sheriff Mitchell noted that the arrest reflects continued efforts by the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office and Tactical Narcotics Team to target illegal drug activity throughout the parish.

Law enforcement officials remind the public that all charges are allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sabine Parish Sheriff’s office warns residents about fraudulent DMV text scam

The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to remain alert after reports of a fraudulent text message scam impersonating the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) began circulating.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers are sending text messages claiming recipients have unresolved traffic citations and threatening severe consequences if immediate payment is not made.

The scam message falsely warns individuals that failure to pay by a stated deadline could result in canceled vehicle registration, indefinite driver’s license suspension, civil judgment proceedings, and even possible arrest warrants.

Recipients are then directed to click a suspicious payment link and are urged to act quickly to avoid losing driving privileges.

Law enforcement officials stressed that residents should not click any links included in the message, as doing so could expose personal or financial information to scammers.

The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office advised anyone receiving the message to:

Do not click any links

Do not provide payment or personal information

Report the message as spam

Delete the text immediately

Officials emphasized that scam messages often create urgency and fear in an attempt to pressure recipients into acting before verifying legitimacy.

Residents with concerns about traffic citations, vehicle registration, or license issues are encouraged to contact the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles directly through official channels rather than responding to unsolicited texts or emails.

The Sheriff’s Office continues encouraging the public to stay vigilant against phishing scams and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement when necessary.

Authorities remind residents that protecting personal information is critical as text-based scams continue targeting individuals across Louisiana and nationwide.

North Louisiana officials warn of emerging synthetic opioid threat detected in multiple jurisdictions

Public safety and law enforcement officials are issuing a warning about a rapidly emerging synthetic opioid threat after new laboratory findings confirmed additional detections across multiple jurisdictions in North Louisiana.

According to the North Louisiana Crime Lab, a dangerous synthetic opioid known as cychlorphine is continuing to spread, reinforcing concerns first identified last month. Officials say the situation is not isolated but instead reflects a developing and expanding drug trend in the region.

Lab analysts report that cychlorphine belongs to a class of synthetic opioids referred to as “orphines” and may be more potent than fentanyl, one of the most dangerous opioids currently impacting communities nationwide. The substance has been found in counterfeit oxycodone tablets, often mislabeled as “M30” or “K56,” creating a significant risk for unsuspecting users who may not realize what they are ingesting.

Authorities emphasize that illicit pills circulating in the community are frequently not what they appear to be. According to the crime lab, most submitted counterfeit tablets tested do not contain the substances they are represented to contain, increasing the danger of accidental overdose.

For law enforcement, officials caution that exposure cases may present symptoms consistent with opioid toxidrome, which can resemble narcotic analgesic impairment. First responders are being advised to remain alert for potentially life-threatening overdose situations linked to these substances.

Public safety officials are also stressing the severe risk to the community, noting that even a single counterfeit pill may be enough to cause a fatal overdose.

The North Louisiana Crime Lab has released an updated law enforcement bulletin with additional details and response guidance as agencies across the region work to track and respond to the emerging threat.

Officials are urging continued vigilance and awareness as the situation develops, emphasizing prevention and public education as critical tools in reducing overdose deaths linked to synthetic opioids.
