Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office teaches Pre-K students Halloween safety

Pre-K students at Negreet and Florien schools received an early lesson in Halloween safety Tuesday morning as members of the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office visited classrooms ahead of trick-or-treating later this month.

Sheriff Aaron Mitchell and several deputies spoke with students about simple safety rules children should remember while celebrating Halloween.

Joining Mitchell for the visits were Deputy Harold Pardee, Capt. James Campbell, Lt. Steven Myers, Deputy Stuart Anthony and Deputy Dustin Johnson.

Students were reminded to stay with a grown-up, carry a flashlight, walk instead of run and look both ways before crossing streets.

Deputies also encouraged children to use sidewalks when possible and only approach homes with their lights on.

The children were told not to enter homes while trick-or-treating and to have an adult check their candy before eating it.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, students enjoyed Tuesday’s visit and the opportunity to interact with deputies.

Mitchell and his deputies plan to continue the Halloween safety program throughout October by visiting additional Pre-K classes across Sabine Parish.
