4-H members launch growing green service-learning project

Sabine Parish 4-H members joined Master Gardeners Monday to begin the Growing Green in Sabine project, a service-learning effort aimed at beautifying areas of the local community while teaching youth about gardening and long-term landscape maintenance.

A team of Master Gardeners prepared the project areas last week before 4-H members arrived Monday morning. Participants continued cleaning the designated areas and began planting flowers and other plants.

The project is sponsored by the Master Gardeners and Family Farm and is designed to give 4-H members hands-on experience with the work required to create and maintain attractive community spaces.

Work will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, with participants focusing on a different area each day. The project will extend beyond the initial planting, as teams will be responsible for maintaining their assigned areas in the coming months.

In April, Master Gardeners will evaluate the areas and select the team that has done the best job maintaining its space.
Community members are also invited to participate in the project Tuesday and Wednesday. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at the

Sabine Parish 4-H office before beginning the day’s work.

The Sabine Parish AgCenter thanked the Master Gardeners and Family Farm for supporting the project and providing local 4-H members with an opportunity to combine community service with practical gardening experience.
