The Sabine Animal Shelter is continuing its effort to reduce pet overpopulation by offering a limited number of free spay and neuter vouchers to Sabine Parish residents each month.
The program opens on the first day of every month at 8 a.m., with assistance available to the first 25 qualifying callers.
Residents seeking a voucher should call 318-315-2874 beginning at 8 a.m. on the first of the month. The shelter asks residents not to call before the designated time.
Callers should continue trying until they reach the answering service and then leave their name, telephone number and a brief message explaining what type of pet needs to be spayed or neutered. The first 25 callers will receive a return call to provide additional information.
For those selected, the Sabine Animal Shelter will cover 100% of the cost of the spay or neuter procedure, a rabies vaccination and a microchip.
The program is available only to Sabine Parish residents.
Shelter officials emphasized that spaying and neutering pets is an important part of controlling animal overpopulation and reducing the number of unwanted animals entering shelters.
Because only 25 vouchers are available each month, residents interested in participating are encouraged to mark their calendars and be prepared to call promptly when the program opens.
