Masen Starks of Many represented Sabine Parish as he competed with fellow Northwestern State University students at the Louisiana/Mississippi Mathematical Association of America competition in Lafayette on Feb. 28.

Starks joined Shannon Boone of Deville and Natalie Sutton of Bossier City in competing in both the Integration Bee and the Team Competition.

Starks tied for fourth place out of approximately 60 students in the Integration Bee, narrowly missing a second-place finish.

The Team Competition featured 20 problems covering multiple areas of mathematics. More than 20 teams from 11 schools across Louisiana and Mississippi participated.

“Our team has been consistently improving their position over the last couple years,” said Nicholas Richardson, assistant professor of mathematics and team sponsor at Northwestern State University.
